The primary goals of reconstructive surgery are to repair the defect caused by removing the tumor, protect the vital structures of the body, promote wound healing, maintain important functions such as breathing, swallowing, and speaking, and restore appearance. The reconstruction is most commonly accomplished during the same operation as the ablative surgery, and on occasion, at a later time during a second operation.
