Tracheoesophageal puncture (TEP)

A surgically created hole between the back wall of the trachea and the front wall of the esophagus in a person who has had their larynx removed. A speaking valve is then inserted through this hole, allowing air to be directed from the trachea into the esophagus and out the mouth. This allows a laryngectomy patient who is otherwise unable to speak to resume talking.
