seeking medical attention - telemedicine

Charlotte, a 27-year-old tongue cancer survivor, had a frightening experience when she noticed an odd mouth ulcer that wouldn’t heal. She shared her story with Newsbreak: “At first, I thought it was just stress, but it wasn’t going away, so I went to get it checked out.” She was shocked when her doctor diagnosed it as cancer, but she remained determined to fight it with the support of her family and friends.

In Charlotte’s case, her mouth ulcer was a symptom of oral cancer, which can be a very aggressive and fast-growing cancer. Early detection is key to successfully treating oral cancer, and it’s important to seek medical attention as soon as possible.

Symptoms of Oral Cancer

  • A painful sore or ulcer in the mouth that doesn’t heal within two weeks.
  • Persistent pain or discomfort in the mouth.
  • White or red patches on the gums, tongue, or lining of the mouth.
  • Swelling in the mouth or neck.
  • Loose teeth or dentures that don’t fit correctly.
  • Difficulty swallowing or speaking.
  • Recurrent bleeding from the mouth.
  • Persistent bad breath.

If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s important to see your doctor or dentist as soon as possible. They may refer you to a specialist for further testing and treatment, such as a biopsy or surgery.

It’s important to prioritize your health and seek medical attention if something feels off.

Charlotte underwent surgery to remove half of her tongue, which was difficult, but she kept a positive attitude throughout. “It was tough, but I was grateful for every day, and the support of my loved ones really helped me stay positive and focused on my recovery,” she said. Charlotte’s positive mindset and determination played a significant role in her successful recovery.

Now cancer-free, Charlotte wants others to know that they don’t have to give up hope when they receive a cancer diagnosis. “It’s important to prioritize your health and seek medical attention if something feels off. Cancer doesn’t have to be a death sentence,” she said. Charlotte’s message of hope and resilience is an inspiration to others who may be going through a similar cancer journey. She believes that with the right mindset and support, anything is possible.
