How to Qualify for Social Security Disability Benefits

If you have been diagnosed with thyroid cancer and you can’t work, you might be able to file a claim for Social Security disability benefits.

If you have been diagnosed with thyroid cancer and you can’t work because of the symptoms that you are experiencing or because of the treatment that you are going through, you can file a claim for Social Security disability benefits. If you expect that you will not be able to work for at least a year and you have paid into the system by paying taxes, you can file a claim for Social Security benefits.

Medically Qualifying for Disability Benefits Due to Thyroid Cancer

To be eligible for disability benefits, you need to file a claim for benefits and submit medical evidence that proves that you meet the requirements for your condition. These requirements  are contained in the Social Security Administration’s Blue Book. You must meet these requirements before your claim can be approved.

Some conditions are so serious that you will not need to provide a lot of medical proof to qualify for benefits. Thyroid cancer is one of those conditions. Thyroid cancer actually qualifies you for expedited processing of your claim so that you can get benefits even faster. This is because it is on the Compassionate Allowance list. All you need to turn in with your claim form is a doctor’s diagnosis of thyroid cancer. You can also submit documentation like biopsy results, MRI results, or PET scans if you want to, but these are not necessary.

When you file a claim for Social Security disability benefits because of thyroid cancer, the Social Security Administration’s computer system will automatically flag your application and bump it to the head of the line for faster processing. In many cases people who qualify for Compassionate Allowance can start receiving benefits in as little was two weeks.

Filing A Social Security Claim

You can fill out a claim for Social Security disability benefits online if that is convenient for you. But, if you are struggling to fill out the claim form, the best thing to do is call your local branch of the Social Security Administration. You can make an appointment to sit down with a staff member who will help you go through the application. They can show you how to fill out the claim paperwork and submit your claim along with your diagnosis from a doctor.
