Hearing the word “cancer” from your doctor may be very frightening, and after this initial shock, the rest of your conversation may feel like a blur. But “cancer” actually describes many different diseases with unique outcomes and treatments. In fact, two types of cancer in the same part of the body can have very different prognoses.
The prognosis, or the predicted course of an illness, is typically determined by your doctor based on test results. As you process your diagnosis, you may have questions about the cancer, the tests, and the next steps. It is okay and even encouraged that you ask questions to aid your understanding. This suggested list may be a good place to start.
