Happy Holidays!
It’s that time of year once again, and although this is supposed to be a season of joy, that is not necessarily the case for many individuals and families. It is easy to understand how the holiday season can be overwhelming. With all the shopping, decorating, cooking and traveling, the holidays can already be a stressful time of year. But when cancer treatment is added to this mix, normal holiday stress can feel unbearable. If you will be spending the holidays with a cancer patient, or as a cancer patient yourself, take a look at these simple ways to cope with cancer. These helpful tips might make the holidays more enjoyable this year.
Take Stock
One of the first things you can do to reduce stress over the holidays is to acknowledge the reality of your current situation. It is important to assess the physical, mental, and even financial impacts that cancer has presented to you and/or your loved ones. It can be hard to break away from traditional roles during the giving season, but it is helpful to understand that you may not be able to prepare an elaborate dinner, buy expensive gifts, or set up decorations in your current condition.
While that prospect may be upsetting, this is a good opportunity to reframe expectations for yourself, and to rethink old traditions. You can consider your favorite holiday activities, and modify them to meet your needs. Remember, there isn’t one right way to celebrate the holidays, and it is okay to put yourself and your needs first!
Advice for Loved Ones
If you plan to spend the holidays with someone going through cancer treatment, it can be hard to adjust to the changes. But, there is still quite a bit that you can do to make this time easier for them. If your loved one has cancer, be sure to listen to their needs, and offer to help when you can. Additionally, make sure that you discuss expectations, and do your best to help modify activities and traditions to suit their needs.
